Fight back: Daily Express claimed a “shocking £33bn cost of open-doors migration policy” has been “revealed”. The truth: The £33bn is Reform UK’s own projection, with no published method. No 10 says it isn’t proposing a return to free movement.

On 26 October, the Daily Express published a story headlined “Shocking £33bn cost of open-doors migration policy revealed – ‘catastrophe for Britain!’”.

The headline presents a political party’s unexplained number as established fact, and attaches it to a policy that doesn’t exist.

Nobody revealed a £33bn cost. The article itself shows the figure is Reform UK’s own projection of the extra infrastructure spending it says would be needed over ten years if net EU migration returned to 164,000 a year. Reform has published no method for it.

Nor is there an “open-doors migration policy”. On the day the story ran, a No 10 spokeswoman said the Prime Minister “isn’t proposing a return to freedom of movement”.
