HACKED OFF CONDEMNS MALONEY'S PRESS HARASSMENT

13/08/2014

Hacked Off

Hacked Off has condemned today's revelation that Kellie Maloney was forced by members of the press to reveal details about her new life as a woman.

Hacked Off's Executive Director Joan Smith stated “Once again, a citizen of this country has been harassed into revealing details of an intensely private matter by insensitive and intrusive journalism. Kellie Maloney should have had a choice of if and when to tell her story, instead of feeling coerced into doing so by some members of the press. This is exactly the kind of behaviour which was roundly condemned in the Leveson report. Hacked Off continues to call for an effective press regulator to protect members of the public at vulnerable moments in their lives.”

The former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney has revealed that she only went public about her new life as a woman because two newspapers had threatened to expose her. The full story can be read here.Executive Director Joan Smith is available for comment. Please contact press@hackinginquiry.org for more information.
