Monstering the Rocket Man: a play by Henry Naylor

12/02/2026

A new play exposes the homophobic and intrusive coverage which Sir Elton John suffered at the hands of The Sun newspaper in the 1980s.

It's currently showing at the Arcola Theatre in London, and you can learn more about it below.  Tickets are available here.

IT’S ELTON JOHN VS. THE SUN!!

WORLD’S BIGGEST STAR battles WORLD’S TOUGHEST TABLOID in EPIC eighties’ clash!!

When the soaraway Sun newspaper falsely accuses Elton John, 39, of bonking rent boys, the Rocketman blasts off a whopping multi-million lawsuit…

But fuming editor, Kelvin Mackenzie, 40, is unrepentant, and launches a blistering campaign of media harassment...

At the end will Elton still be standing? Or will the Sun go down on him?

Based on the TRUE STORY of Britain’s largest-ever libel case, it features Ferraris, punch-ups, bugged phone calls, the Duchess of York, the Vice Squad and some Devil Dogs...

Set in 80s Britain, this brand-new show shines a light on some of today's hottest topics, including: What is the role of the press, to entertain or inform? To tell good stories, or true stories? To make profits, or hold power accountable?

A massive hit at the last Edinburgh Festival, this sell-out show received 22 five- and four-star reviews and won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First.

Written and performed by four-time Fringe First Winner Henry Naylor, and directed by two-time Drama Desk Nominee Darren Lee Cole, the show plays at the Arcola Theatre in London from Feb 3rd - 21st.
