One year on - support for Royal Charter continues to grow
Victims of press abuse are shunning IPSO in favour of the Royal Charter agreed by all 3 party leaders and sealed by the Privy Council a year ago today.
Landmark reform of press regulation came after the failure of two High Court actions by the Press Standards Board of Finance, the funding body of the failed Press Complaints Commission to prevent the move. Lord Justice Richards described the merits of the claimants’ case as “at best weak”
Hacked Off launched the Leveson Royal Charter Declaration to support the new reforms on 29 November last year to mark the first anniversary of the publication of the Leveson Report into the culture, practice and ethics of the Press which accused the press of “wreaking havoc” with innocent people’s lives and causing “real hardship” to members of the public.
Two years on and victims of press abuse are still coming forward and members of the public continue to contact us to lend their support to the Royal Charter Declaration which demands that Lord Justice Leveson’s recommendations be fully implemented, as promised by Parliament.
Thousands of people have signed The Leveson Royal Charter Declaration into press reform including victims of press abuse and leading names from literature, the arts, science, academia, design, human rights, business and the law – plus thousands of concerned members of the public.
We believe that a free press is a cornerstone of democracy. It should be fearless in exposing corruption, holding the powerful to account and championing the powerless. It has nothing to lose, and can only be enhanced, by acknowledging unethical practice in its midst and acting firmly to ensure it is not repeated.
We also believe that editors and journalists will rise in public esteem when they accept a form of self-regulation that is independently audited on the lines recommended by Lord Justice Leveson and laid down in the Royal Charter of 30 October 2013.
