On 1 November 2026, the Daily Mail published a headline stating that HS2 tunnelling “causes” Victorian houses near Queen’s Park station in north-west London to “sink and crack”.
The article’s own text does not establish the cause. It notes that some cracks had been visible “for years”, and quotes HS2 saying its monitoring shows settlement “small in magnitude and in line with expectations”. It cites no engineer’s assessment.
The article also put HS2’s cost at “more than £100million”. The Government’s latest report to Parliament puts it at £87.7 billion to £102.7 billion, around a thousand times higher.
The Daily Mail reaches up to 16.2 million people, every one of whom could have been misled by this headline.
